Before you begin, ensure that you have all the required tools and materials needed for the shed construction project. It would be terrible if you had to stop construction because you forgot to buy some specific tool or construction material. Here is a short general list of the items commonly need for shed building.

  • Wooden or metal brackets
  • Plywood Sheets
  • Door Hinges
  • Screws and Nails
  • Tin sheets
  • Caulk gun and Window caulk
  • Stain or Paint
  • Roller and Paint brush
  • 2 x4s and other lumber pieces

The length of each lumber section and the number of pieces required will depend on the garden shed blueprints. It is preferable to use pressure treated wood as they are more resistant to weather and pests. Some of the tools needed for construction include

  • Measuring tape
  • Circular saw and miter saw
  • Screw driver
  • Nail gun or hammer
  • Ladder
  • Pencil or chalk box

Once you have assembled all the tools and materials needed, then you can begin construction of you 10×12 shed.

Build The Floor and Wall Frames

Cut out the wooden boards required for the floor frame and nail all the 4 sides with each other. Measure the diagonals of the frame to ensure their size is accurate. Secure the frame into the ground.

Next cut out the support beams and position them at the four corners of the floor frame. Check that each section of the floor frame is flush with the support beam before you nail them together. Start adding remaining pieces of the floor and make sure each piece is flush with the adjacent piece on all sides before nailing it in.

Cut out all the pieces required for the wall frames. Build the frame on the ground and making sure to check that the diagonals match up so the frame is properly square. After a wall section is finished, hoist it into place and nail it to the support beam and floor frame. Make sure each wall is flush with the beam and the floor.

Measure the opening for the door on the wall frame section and build the frame for the door before you hoist it into place. This will make your job easier.

Cut out the plywood for the walls as per the shed blueprints 10×12. Nail each sheet of plywood to the wall frame using one nail at each corner. When you are nailing the boards to the wall frame make sure to use a nail at every 8 inch interval from top to bottom to make sure the wall is secured properly.

Building the roof

You can make use of either rafters or trusses for building the roof. Use metal brackets to hold the joints of the trusses to make the roof stronger.

Construct the trusses on the ground and later hoist them into place and nail them down. Keep your ladder inside the shed and lay down each truss leaning on the shed.

Tie the rafter with a rope and throw the other end of the rope over the wall frame. Climb up the ladder and pull the rafter up. This will allow you to finish your work quickly without external help.

Measure the roof from side to side and keep at least a 6 inch overhang on each side. Cut out the tin sheet using a circular saw using chalk lines as guides. Nail the roof on each rafter and stud at intervals of 8 inches.

    Installing the Door

Finally we install the door of the shed. Cut out the wooden pieces for the door and construct it on the ground. Measure the diagonals to check that it is square. Hoist the door into the door frame to check that it fits snugly. Next, attach hinges to the door laying it on the floor. Add each hinge about 5 inches from the top and bottom.

It is more convenient to have the door swing outwards to allow for greater space within the shed. Check that there is enough free space outside the shed for the door to swing out. Attach the screw to the hinges and secure the door to the frame. First loosely attach both screws, and then first tighten the screws on the top hinge making sure the doo remains parallel to the frame. Lastly tighten the screws on the bottom hinge. If you want to use a handle for pulling the door open and a latch for keeping the door closed, ensure that the door lines up properly with the door frame before you completely tighten the screws on each hinge.

    Installing Windows

Apply window calk about 1/2 inches from the opening for the window on all sides. Set the window in place and hold it for about 5 minutes till the calk begins to set. Next, you can fix and tighten the screws in all the holes provided in the window. Usually windows come with pre-bored holes. Lastly, cover the outer edges of the window frames with calk to make sure it is secure into place firmly.

    Finishing Touches

The last step is to paint or stain your 10×12 shed to make it weather proof. Make sure you stain contains sealant or if you prefer pain then use exterior emulsion paint.

Use a pain roller to finish the job quickly and use the brush for places which are hard to reach. You can pain the shed before attaching the windows if you want to keep any paint from getting on the windows.

You can further customize the interior of your shed as per your needs. You can add inner walls using plywood and cover up the studs. Structures for electrical lighting or plumbing structures can be added. You can build shelves on the inner walls for holding light and small item like tools or keep potted plants. You can also build racks for hanging shovels, rakes and brooms.
